Catching The Wanderlust Bug
Our adventure began in late 2011 when Sean and I decided we wanted to go away during our university break. Where we w anted to go.. we didn’t know. We toyed with scuba diving in Thailand, snowboarding in Japan or visiting some of the untouched parts of Indonesia. But we decided none of these options were for us.. Not yet.
So with little research, a couple of google image searches of the stunning Caribbean waters and ancient Mayan ruins, and the desire to do something completely different to what either of us had done before, we booked flights for a 6 week trip*, flying into Mexico City and out of Panama City.
We had 6 weeks before our flight left. Not exactly enough time to master the Spanish language or even decide where we wanted to go, what we wanted to do and what we wanted to see. We decided we would work it out once we got there.
Armed with a single backpack each, inappropriate clothing (who knew it got cold at altitude…) and our Lonely Planet guidebook we boarded our flight to Mexico City via LAX and began our adventure. An adventure that would change what both of us wanted to do with our future, an adventure that would show us both that there’s a big world out there, an adventure that wouldn’t just end after this one 6 week trip.
Here’s our story. We hope it inspires yours.
* If you do this trip PLEASE give yourself more than 6 weeks. Give yourself 6 months! The longer you have to explore any corner of the globe the better. With only 6 weeks we had to miss activities and even completely skip a couple of countries. Nicaragua and EL Salvador we’re sorry and we’re coming for you in 2015.
